Taming & first steps
How do I tame a beast?
First check that you have learned Tame Beast. In Classic, the level 10 hunter quest chain introduces your first pet. Finish the follow-up quests for feeding and training too. Check the current unlocks with your hunter trainer in Forever.
Stable your existing pet. Find a tameable beast, target it and cast Tame Beast. Stand still during the channel and avoid interruptions. Clear nearby enemies before starting.

Why can’t I tame this beast?
Read the error message: is the target tameable, do you meet its level requirement, and have you stabled your existing pet? Looking like a beast does not guarantee tameability.
If the channel is interrupted, try again from a safe position. Atlas locations and tameability may be historical records; check the note on the individual animal.

How do I swap pets without losing one?
Stable your current pet before taming another. You can select stored pets again at the stable master. Check available slots and any costs there.
Abandoning a pet does not store it: use the stable instead. The number of available slots can differ between game versions.

Which pet family should I choose?
Decide what you need: questing support, enemy control or a contribution to your group. Compare family abilities and try the pet in everyday play.
Blizzard’s Forever overview gives every family its own ability. That does not establish one best pet for every situation.

Food & care
How do I feed my pet?
Call your pet and wait until both of you are out of combat. Activate Feed Pet and select suitable food from your bags. Check your pet family’s diet; not every pet eats everything.
Let the feeding effect run and watch the happiness indicator. If food is rejected, check its type and level. Feeding does not replace Mend Pet in combat.

How can I tell whether my pet is happy?
Watch the mood icon beside the pet portrait. In Classic, green means happy, yellow content and red unhappy. Feeding improves its mood.
Forever beta observations differ on how quickly happiness falls. Use the in-game indicator, especially after taming or reviving a pet. We therefore do not promise a fixed feeding interval.

What if my pet is injured or dead?
Use Mend Pet when your living pet is injured. If it has died, use Revive Pet. Call Pet brings back a dismissed companion; it does not revive a dead one.
Find a safe spot first, then check its health and mood before attacking the next enemy.

Abilities & training
How does my pet learn new abilities?
The Classic system has skills learned from a pet trainer and skills learned through another tamed beast. Use that beast’s skill until the learning message appears, then teach it to an eligible companion through Beast Training.
Check family, pet level, ability rank and training points. Forever changes family access, so do not assume old rank and beast lists still apply.

What are loyalty and training points?
In Classic, pet level and loyalty determine training points, which pay for learnable skills. A newly tamed pet can initially show negative points because it already knows some abilities.
Keep it fed and gain experience together. Read current values and requirements in Beast Training; we do not assume the Forever calculation is unchanged.

What changes for pet abilities in Forever?
Blizzard’s class overview gives every family access to Bite or Claw, sometimes both, plus Dash or Dive and a unique family ability.

Why isn’t my pet using an ability?
Check that the skill is learned and available on the pet action bar. Check autocast, focus, cooldown, range and a valid target.
Try casting it manually against a single enemy. This helps distinguish a missing requirement from disabled autocast.

Adventuring as a hunter
Should I turn off Growl in dungeons?
When another player is tanking, normally disable Growl autocast and coordinate with the tank. While solo questing, it helps your pet keep enemies occupied.
Check the setting again after swapping pets and send your companion only at the agreed target.

How do I stop my pet pulling extra enemies?
Use passive stance and deliberate attack commands around tightly packed enemies. Recall your pet early and avoid area damage near crowd-controlled targets.
Consider dismissing it before jumps or shortcuts: a pet may take a longer route through other enemies. Call it again at a safe location.

Can I use traps during combat?
Yes. Blizzard’s Forever overview allows traps during combat. You still place them at your own position.
Plan placement and guide enemies to the trap. Avoid damaging a frozen enemy if you want to keep it controlled.

Are rare or elite beasts automatically better?
Rarity or elite status alone is not a reliable pet recommendation. Compare actual abilities and how well a pet fits your play style.
The atlas lists recorded animals, regions and maps. Check their data status: historical locations, spawn times and tameability are not confirmed Forever facts. Plan your search without a guaranteed spawn time.

Does my pet benefit from my gear?
Yes. Blizzard confirms that Forever pets scale with hunter gear and no longer receive player buffs that increase their stats.
The overview does not give a complete formula. Compare specific values in the current game.
